Vivek Parshotam, the visionary behind VK Jewellery, isn’t just a designer; he’s a storyteller. With a deep passion for design and a love for nature’s inspiration, Vivek crafts exquisite pieces that transcend mere adornment. Today, we delve into his creative process, the essence of VK Jewellery, and the stories waiting to be told through his bespoke jewellery.

Vivek, your journey began at the University of Johannesburg, formerly the Technikon of Witwatersrand. What sparked your initial interest in jewellery design?

Before jewellery design, I was an IT student who loved graphic design and web design. Drawing, sketching, and animation were always fun for me. I got selected by the Technikon, where I excelled at drawing and creating handmade items from natural materials like wood. Imagining items made from precious metals, gems, and diamonds excited my inner creative side.

Winning the SA Mint Design Competition in your first year is no small feat! How did this early recognition impact your design aspirations?

That was a huge surprise to me as well, but I guess I followed all the necessary theme requirements. I was sitting at the event, chatting with my colleagues, and not hearing my name called as the first-prize winner was funny. All my colleagues looked and stared at me, saying, “YOU WON!” It was an emotional moment but a great achievement for my first year.

You then went on to achieve a top 10 position in the Plat Africa competition’s professional category. How did these competitions shape your design approach?

Working in the industry and being trained by a professional mentor shifted my mindset from student interpretation to professional interpretation. Being part of the Top 10 professionals in the country was an amazing feeling. It motivates you to achieve more and become better at your craft.

Nature seems to be a recurring theme in your work. Can you elaborate on the role it plays in your design inspiration?

If we look around us, nature is the very essence of life. From the smallest atom to the biggest, design is inherent in everything we see. By closely observing natural elements and incorporating them into our designs, we can create anything imaginable using precious metals, colourful gems, and diamonds.

VK Jewellery caters to a wide spectrum, from minimalist designs to elaborate pieces. How do you ensure each client receives a creation that reflects their unique personality?

Our design process involves careful attention to detail, understanding and interpreting the client’s needs, and following their requirements. We translate a concept into a sketch and ultimately, the final masterpiece.

Personal service is a cornerstone of your philosophy. Why is building a one-on-one connection with clients so important to you?

Building a one-on-one relationship with clients brings comfort, security, confidence, and trust. Knowing that we can personally visit our clients in their own space fosters a sense of comfort and happiness. Trust is important, and building it creates a sense of family between us.

What’s the most fulfilling aspect of crafting bespoke jewellery for your clients?

Seeing their reaction when they receive their branded bags and packaging, slowly unfolding the box, and witnessing the awe and excitement in their eyes as they see their final piece is always incredibly satisfying.

Beyond design, VK Jewellery prioritizes quality in materials and manufacturing excellence. How do you ensure every piece embodies these values?

Knowing your craft, having a deep understanding of the materials we use, and sourcing ethical gems and diamonds are paramount to us. If a client demands the best, they will receive more than the best.

You create jewellery for life’s milestones. Can you share a story of a client entrusting you with a particularly special piece?

We create many special, one-off bespoke pieces. One such piece was created for a client whose name held the meaning of a lotus flower. Both partners had experienced difficult pasts, but the lotus flower symbolizes the ability to rise above adversity and produce beauty. We designed a special lotus flower pendant in 18ct yellow gold, set with a beautiful pear-shaped natural diamond and accented with smaller diamonds flowing down the white gold band. This piece serves as a constant reminder that no matter our past, our present can always bloom like a beautiful lotus flower.

What advice would you give to aspiring jewellery designers looking to carve their own niche?

Do it! Don’t be afraid to take that leap, put your design on paper, and start creating a masterpiece. Every piece is unique, just as each of us is unique.

What excites you the most about the future of VK Jewellery?

We envision building a larger family around the world, creating more masterpieces, whether simple or intricate, and allowing our clients to proudly showcase their pieces to the world.

Where do you see yourself and VK Jewellery in the next five years?

As we grow older and wiser, we aspire to set a trend and inspire young jewellers to follow and admire our work and many other amazing designers out there. We see every client appreciating our work and saying, “What an exceptional work of art!” when admiring their jewellery pieces even ten years from now.

Finally, Vivek, if there’s one message you’d like to share with your clients, what would it be?

“If you don’t know jewellery, know the jeweller.” And to those who already know us, we thank you for trusting our services.
